The softness comes from Tencel Modal, a fabric derived from beech tree pulp sourced from sustainable forests in Central Europe. An impressive 95% of raw material winds up as Modal, a fibre that is – according to Japan’s Kawabata evaluation system – twice as soft as cotton. Yet a soft and environmentally-sensitive fabric tells only half the story. Tree Trunks are designed by James Lamont, known for creating go-faster fabrics for elite cyclists, skiers and swimmers (Ian Thorpe wore one of James’ designs when he won an Olympic gold medal). Having positioned all seams away from potential chafe areas, James has added a touch of stretchy Lycra to our Modal fabric for extra support – and to ensure that your sleek Tree Trunks retain their signature shape and fit after repeated washes. Not that you have to launder Tree Trunks every day: beech tree fibres are naturally antibacterial and dry quickly – helpful attributes when you travel fast and light. (Although perhaps not quite as fast and light as Ian Thorpe.) Weight: 70g (medium). Certification: wood pulp procured for Tencel Modal fibres adheres to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards.
